Victoria JohnsonVictoria comes from a long line of creative people. On her mother’s side, her mom, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother, were all accomplished sewists, knitters and quilters. On Victoria father’s side her dad was a welder and metal fabricator, and his father was a wood worker who built boats and homes.

One Christmas Eve when Victoria was around 11, her grandparents gave her a used feather weight sewing machine. Early that Christmas morning Victoria, her brother and her younger sister got up early to try out the cute little sewing machine. They each took turns sewing on lined paper without thread to see who could sew the straightest line; of course Victoria’s was the straightest. She has always wondered what her grandparents saw in her that made them buy her a sewing machine.
With this much creativity on both her mom and dad’s side of the family, there was no doubt that Victoria would be creative as well. She started sewing at a young age, first doll clothes and simple quilts, and then some clothing. Once Victoria’s mom figured out she could make her own clothes her mother stopped buying clothes for her, leaving Victoria to make her own clothes. She made her own clothes throughout high school, and even made some for other family members and friends. In high school Victoria and her best friend got a job at a company that made back packing tents. She also sewed leather clothing and auto upholstery. She went on to make the brides maids dresses for her brother’s wedding, and her younger sister’s senior ball dress. |
When Victoria was in her 40s a doctor recommended that she get out and meet people to help her with some health issues. One day she was in a local quilt shop and saw some quilt blocks that she liked. She approached the shop owner and told her that she wanted to learn how to make them. The shop owner quickly said “No you don’t! You need to start with something easier.” Come to find out the blocks she saw on the wall were paper pieced, and the shop owner didn’t like teaching paper piecing. That didn’t stop Victoria. She took her first official quilting class with a local teacher who asked her “Why are you taking a beginning sewing class? You have far surpassed this level!”
In 2012 Victoria made the official jump to paper piecing when she started her journey to becoming a Judy Niemeyer certified instructor, which she did for 10 years. During that journey Victoria came across a BeColourful Quilt called Brilliant Beauties of Joy and just had to have the pattern and fabric kit. Upon receipt of the pattern, she looked at the instructions and promptly closed the pattern and put it on a shelf.
Several years later, with the encouragement of a fellow paper piecing friend Victoria pulled out the pattern and took another look. This time she was intrigued by what she saw and started making BeColourful Quilts. She got hooked on the method and bright colors and decided that she wanted to become an Authorized BeColourful certified instructor. As Victoria started this new journey to become an instructor, over the next several years she took a couple of classes with Jacqueline de Jonge and made the different levels of BeColourful patterns. Victoria accomplished her goal much sooner than she thought she would. In 2024 Jacqueline and her sister Bridget asked Victoria to join their team. Of course, she accepted their offer!
Victoria is so excited to be a part of Jacquline’s team and to have been given the opportunity to share BeColourful Patterns with other quilters. These patterns have very low fabric waste, are beautifully designed and uses bright, vivid colors. And once a year Jacqueline creates and releases an amazing new design. Victoria is looking forward to having you in one of her
upcoming classes starting in 2025.
