Quilt Inspiration
|
Some of the designs are downright successful, such as "Enchanting Stars", "Infinity", "Brilliant Beauties of Joy" and "Circle of Life". These will probably always stay in the collection because they are so popular.
Every year we choose from the quilts that are made in previous years a design that we will update and republish. We choose one that we think is beautiful and innovative and can be an addition to our collection.
We would really appreciate it if you as quilters would let us know which of the discontinued designs we could re-introduce into our collection.

The Colorful QuiltThe Colorful Quilt is re-designed as "Enchanting Stars"
The Colourful Quilt was my first a-symmetric quilt design and the template sheet has to be printed on one sheet in order to avoid any mismatches in size. As there are only a few printers in the world (!) that are able to print on this size plus the special coated paper and UV resistible ink, the price is a little bit higher than a regular pattern. Due to the complexity we decided a couple of years ago to release 50 units as limited edition only as we were under the impression that there was limited interest for the pattern. But after a couple of years it is still one of our bestselling patterns ever! Enjoy the journey of the flying geese and spikes, the beautiful stars and the challenge of the curves that run fluently into each other to form an amazing constellation. |
JoyWhen I was making Joy in 2003 I had no idea how my life would be look like 10 years later.
I had a severe depression at the time, and when I try to recover I noticed when I was working on my quilt I was feeling better. That’s why I called this quilt Joy. This quilt brought back the happiness in my life again. My father told me that the Open European Quilt Chapigon Ship was held in the Netherlands that year and he asked me if it was possible for me to enter that show with my quilt. I still know that I told him that I was not good enough for a show of that level… But he perswait me to enter. Well… I won the Color Trophy that year and everything is history…… We've re-designed this beauty as "Brilliant Beauties of Joy", which is still a very successful pattern. |
JoyfulJoyful is made by me only to show how the original quilt ”Joy” would look when you use some more romantic or traditional flower fabrics instead of the bright and colorful fabrics.
We had no intention to release this quilt as a pattern (There was a pattern already called “Joy”) but there were so many request that we decided to make is as a pattern on its own and this is one of the quilts of our Rose Collection. There is still a pattern available to make this quilt yourself. The pattern package contains the templates of each pattern part on true to life scale, but you have to do the tracing yourself. This will make the journey to make this quilt even more challenging! We've re-designed this beauty as "Brilliant Beauties of Joy", which is still a very successful pattern. |
SpringtimeCelebrate spring and make your center in leaf shapes from the garden, the eight very special stars in the center of the quilt, the beautiful chequer board border and the four corner stars surrounded by spikes.
This Springtime pattern is one of those patterns where it is, (as you don’t need many different fabrics) a challenge to make this quilt with other fabrics than the original design with the blue and green fabrics. You can keep the white as base for the quilt. We have seen this quilt in so many different color schemes! This gorgeous design is re-designed in 2016 as "Spring Fever".

Summer DreamSummer Dream was our Facebook project during the summer of 2013.
We decided to design a quilt and post "how to make...” pictures on Facebook. I used all the 24 bright batiks from Hoffman that I had used before in another stunning project like "Brilliant Beauties of Joy". You only need 6” x 44” of each of the 24 colors to make these beautiful stars and diamond borders. All the fabrics are combined with the multi-colored Sunflower fabric of Hoffman and of course her favorite black and white striped fabric. So now we have a pattern available to make this quilt yourself! And as you have knowledge of the paper piecing method; you can do it! In our 2020 collection you'll find her re-designed as "Butterfly Garden" in beautiful peach and pink colors |
Purple PassionI've made "Purple Passion" because I want to show you how beautiful "Summer Dream" can be without all the bright colors I normally use.
The soft purples, greens and pinks in combination with the black and white fabrics and of course her favorite black and white stripe, turned this quilt into an elegant and chic design. If you have a stunning piece of fabric of about 1.1 yard that you always wanted to use but you have never find the right pattern for it, this maybe is the opportunity to use it and make your own "Purple Passion" in your favorite colors. Color variation of "Summer Dream" and "Butterfly Garden" |
JewelI was inspired by a picture of the Kremlin in Moscow. The beautiful shapes of this building intrigued me so much that the drawing that I've made became a quilt, named Jewel.
Jewel is made from all kinds of scraps from quilts that I had made in the last few years. I've separated them in 2 color groups to use in the ovals. The effect was so incredible sparkling and bright that I could not put the ovals a side… I needed to finish the quilt and with the black base it became just the quilt that I wanted it to be. For the finishing touch I initially added spangles and crystal beads to accentuate each star. Later these beads have been replaced by Hot Fix Swarovski ® crystals. There are quilters that have entered contests with this quilt and one deserves special attention. A lovely lady made this quilt with scraps made from the ties from her deceased husband…Beautiful… she won the first place! Because we love this design so much we've re-designed her as "Arabian Nights" |
The Happiness quilt is the perfect starter quilt if you're new to paper piecing. This quilt featuters all the techniques you'll find in all my designs. The spikes, the circles, flying geese, sashings, corner parts and the mitered corners. You will work your way through this nice small wall hanging step by step and the result is a wonderful happy quilt.
in 2019 we've re- designed her as: "Happiness 2.0", which will of course, feature all the BeColourful techniques. This quilt project that is also great for the intermediate and up skill level and is a great way to try out my techniques on a smaller scale. "Happiness" is also a great design to use your own fabric choices. Here you'll see the result in 3 different color ways. |
Fly AwayFly Away was our entry for the renowned Hoffman Challenge in 2011. The quilt won the second place pieced. The inspiration for this fabulous design comes from sparkling bubbles that are floating behind each other when they fly into the sky.
This quilt is full of off center circles, beautiful stars, New York Beauties and flying geese. You can make this quilt in any color you want. I loved the greens, but what about beautiful reds, orange, pinks and yellows. This quilt will look stunning in every color scheme. With this quilt we also started to glue the sparkling Hot fix Swarovski ® Crystals. The crystals add a lot to the quilt. With the right lighting and a little motion this quilt is a pleasure for the eyes! Because this was such a popular pattern, we decided to re-designed her as "Dream Flight", which was our first Block of the Month |
KaleidoscopeI love marble fabrics and I once had a huge collection of dots, large and small and sometimes I love to use them ;-) When I designed Kaleidoscope I thought it would be nice to use some of my precious marble stash. I think it became a different quilt, but it’s still a BeColourful quilt and with the little and large dots it looks totally different.
But sometimes I think…. How would this quilt be in soft pastels: like yellow, pink, lime, aqua and peach.. In 2016, I finally re-designed this lovely quilt as "When Summer Ends". However, not in these bright and vibrant colors. I've made this in the beautiful warm Autumn colors, greens, yellows and soft browns. That will gives you a whole different feel about this design. |
BloomingtaleThe first Bloomingtale quilt is one of the quilts from the Rose Collection. The beautiful borders around the quilt give this quilt its special look. Together with the soft pastels of the rose fabrics the overall look is very delicate.
In order to give this quilt a different look, I've made Blooming Tale again but now in French General Fabrics. The reds and the creamy base color accentuated the special shapes even more. The center star, the spiked circle around the star, the flying geese and the New York Beauty arches seems to run under the flying geese borders. The quilt looks spectacular in a stunning and easy way. It is up to you if you want to make Faded Memories in rose fabrics or in French General Fabrics or blues, or maybe your own colors?? Recently we've re-designed this lovely design as "Allegra" in the fabulous Rainbow colors |
Pretty PurplePretty Purple is a quilt in which the colors of the base fabrics are used for the details. The number of colors in the fabric gave Jacqueline the inspiration for the color transitions which she used for the spiked border and the flying geese.
The use of these colors resulted in a very special effect. For Jacqueline it is always very challenging to come up with a quilt, based on traditional shapes and made from actual colors. The eight specially designed beautiful star points add something to this quilt. And when you accentuate the white parts of the fabric with a lot of small beads in the colors of the fabric it is not only a beautiful quilt but it will be a stunningly beautiful quilt and a real eye catcher on your wall. . Re-designed as Magic Forest |
Making MemoriesInvited by Quilters World, Jacqueline designed this gorgeous and colorful quilt specially for the magazine.
A fabulous design available for anyone who like to try out their first BeColourful quilt. Made in gorgeous batiks from Anthology fabrics and in Jacqueline's designed fabrics. You'll have lots of fun making all these lovely stars and enjoy yourself with all these spiky pieces. Together with Jacqueline's signature striped fabric, you'll have yourself a real BeColourful. Making Memories is featured in the Spring issue of Quilters World. You can order a digital copy here: http://bit.ly/1ktft9O. We enlarged this glorious pattern and re-designed her as "Summer Breeze" in lovely soft blues and greens |
Sweet MelodyThis is not only a New York Beauty quilt, but also one of the most traditional designs.
A lot of quilters love to make New York Beauties. The spiked circles, the blocks, the lovely corners with the half round circles. It definitely is a pretty quilt. I've designed and makes this quilt years ago. It is still a pleasure to look at. The pink colors, the flower fabric and the stripes making this quilt timeless. This quilt is beautiful in any color scheme. That's why I've decided to re-design this beauty in awesome lilac colors as Black Beauty |
Sunset CirclesThis Sunset Circles is made from fabrics that I had received from Island Batik. At the trade show in Houston in 2007 we agreed that I would make a quilt for their booth at the International Spring Quilt Market 2008 in Portland. Unfortunately, the fabrics arrived later than expected and only 4 weeks before the show I received the box…
Making a new design on such a short notice is really impossible.. For my designs I am often inspired by the looks and feeling of the fabrics that I wan to use. And, lucky as I am, I can always pick one of my existing designs, and as Circle of Life is still one of my favorites, I decided to use this pattern for the quilt for Island Batiks. I have made Sunset Circles in 5 days. And although I really like red and purple colored fabrics, after 5 days I had really had it with these 2 colors. But although I was able to finish the top in 5 days, I had still not enough time to quilt this quilt by hand. Fortunately, Elly Prins lives in Zoetermeer, and when I called her to explain the challenge to quilt this quilt on a very short notice, she spontaneously said that she would make time for this. Elly was able to finish the quilting in 4 days on her long arm quilt machine. I could finish the quilt and Sunset Circles was delivered in time at the booth of Island Batiks. |
Celtic FantasyThe Hoffman Challenge is always a real challenge for me. The fabric they selected for 2013 was the most difficult fabric you have ever seen. The background of this fabric was beige…. yes indeed…. beige. The other colors in this fabric were gold, aqua, teal and cobalt blue. It was very hard to come up with any idea. But I wanted to enter the contest and I designed a beautiful design with lots of curves and lots of spikes. In a magazine I've noticed an advertisement of a watch and I turned that picture into "Celtic Fantasy". It was not only a challenge to design, but it was also very difficult to make. That’s why I hesitated for years to re-design this quilt.
Finally, in 2016 I got myself together and started redesigning this beauty into "Infinity", a 6* design in my favorite Rainbow Colors. |
Catch me... If you can!Catch me.. If you can! Is about the ultimate in paper piecing!
For the base of this design you have to look at the quilt “Elements of Nature”. This quilt was originally designed for our entry in the 2009 Hoffman Challenge where I've won an Honorable mention for that quilt. As you can clearly see, the fabric colors are not exactly my the first choice to work with and I had always said to myself: ”this design is so nice and unique, I want to make again it in my own color way!” The result is Catch me.. If you can! When you take a close look, you will see that Elements of Nature is only a quarter of this quilt. I've put in every effort to make this quilt as over the top as possible. I've used more than 150 different fabrics and colors to make it as stunning as it could be. Also the quilting and the limited amount of Hot Fix Swarovski ® Crystals makes this quilt a feast for the eyes. In the Netherlands I won the Trophy for color and the Viewers choice at the Open European Quilt Championship. At the Road to California show I was third. |
Light into DarknessAnother spectacular design..
Like we always say: a picture never justifies the real thing, it is truly applicable on this quilt. You can clearly see how the colors flow into each other and you absolutely see the lighter and darker spots on the quilt. What you don’t see on the picture are the numerous Hot Fix Swarovski ® crystals all over the quilt in the colors of the fabric. Hang this quilt on your wall, with proper lighting, and every time the quilt will move by a gust of wind or you walking by and you see the sparkling colors all over the quilt, it can only make you happy and proud on yourself as you were the one who made this stunning piece of art! There is a pattern available to make this quilt yourself! And as you have knowledge of the paper foundation method; this is your chance to make this beauty yourself! |
Elements of NatureElements of Nature was our submission for the Hoffman Challenge 2010. It was the first time I entered a quilt in this renowned contest. And it is obvious… These are not exactly the colors I'll used to pick for my designs, so there is the answer to what exactly the Challenge is: Try to make your best quilt as possible with the most boring and dull fabrics available…;)) well … this is not really true of course as there is nothing wrong with these colors, but it is a matter of taste, don’t you agree…
I was quite happy with the end result and after it was quilted the quilt was sent to Colorado and guess what: This quilt got an Honorable Mention!!! And that for entering for the first time only!! Fantastic!! Elements of nature is an a-symmetric quilt design and the template sheet has to be printed on one sheet in order to avoid any mismatches in size. The Large Stars in different sizes and shapes are eye catchers in this quilt and the flying geese and spikes runs through the quilt. Although the colors are not sparkling and bright like some other quilts are, Element of Nature is a stunning quilt that will steal your heart when it comes to live. As Jacqueline was very intrigued by this design, she said to herself: I will make this quilt again, but in my own colors. That quilt is actually made, won several prizes and is called: Catch me… If you can! |
Bright Beginning ColorWhen I was making the yellow and blue Bright Beginning I was surprised how beautiful that quilt looks when it was finished. You will not only see the large compass star in the center and the square which forms the center of the quilt. I was wondering how that will turned out if I make Bright Beginning in my colorful fabrics.
I cut my pieces of fabric a little bit larger so I could make two pieces out of one piece of fabric. And I use black as a base for this quilt. I loved it when all the pieces came together and you can see the colorful motion in the arches. It is not the same as Aurora but I think this colorful Bright Beginning is a very nice quilt that can inspire you. Substitute: Aurora |
AuroraAurora, formerly Bright Beginning;
Bright Beginning is a pattern that is on the market from the start of the BeColourful Company. Originally the quilt was made from yellow, as base fabric, and all different kinds of blue for the spikes. When you like paper piecing and New York beauty arches you can enter this quilt with heart and soul. The fun with this quilt is that it will hold your attention. First you see the complete quilt with the arches, then you see the swirl and later you see the square around the large mariners compass. This has been a very popular pattern from the beginning and we have decided to re-draw and re-write the pattern entirely. I've also made a complete new quilt and now it is called Aurora. It is made with the 24 color groups and black and white as background. The sparkling effect is accentuated by the use of the Hot fix Swarovski ® crystals. |

Stars in the NightStars in the Night is re-designed as "Stars of Light"
Stars in the Night is a combination of paper piecing and cutting. You have to make the lone star in the center from strips and you cut the star points in a 45° angle using a ruler. The remaining of this quilt, including the striped border is made with the paper piecing technique. The bright colors in black makes this quilt a real eye catcher. The transitions of the star circles that are placed around the lone star start a few spikes before the curve and make a lovely and gentle color transition to the next star circle. |
Curling ColorsEver changing swirls and curls fitted in a baby block.
Back in the days when I've visited Paducah in Kentucky I was also invited by Hancock’s of Paducah to do a trunk show. While I was there Moda just introduced their new Kota Batik fabric line. The only challenge for me was, I had to use all the colors of the fabric line in my design that were available at that time. The result of this challenge has become Curling Colours. I've used all the 60 colors I received, even the somewhat dull browns, greys and beige ones… You probably can imagine that these colors are not here favorites. The curves are gentle and the New York Beauty arches are flowing into each other. The result is a quilt with a lot of motion that keeps attracting your eyes. |
Midnight StarsMidnight Stars, formerly Surprisingly Red;
Surprisingly Red is one of the patterns that is on the market since the start of BeColourful. We have made this quilt in first instance in light blue pastels, rose fabrics and warm reds and they are brought together in perfect harmony in this stunning quilt pattern. But the fabrics that we chose for the original quilt are not available anymore and the search for alternative fabrics is for a lot of quilters almost a mission impossible. We decided that…. as this design is so attractive and appealing to a lot of quilters, to re-draw and re-write the entire pattern to live up to your expectations. We also add a beautiful circle with flying geese to it and even the quilt is made again with the 24 colors embedded in black… we are sure that these 24 bright colors are widely available and you don’t have to be afraid that the fabrics will be discontinued, and if it does, there is always a good substitute available! |
Surprisingly RedSurprisingly Red is my favorite. Why….I don’t know. It is a quilt that is appealing by the use of the colors and radiation. For another reason I am happy with Surprisingly Red.
The search for the colors is quite a story. I had the fabric with the large roses in my house for a long time and at the Quilt Expo in The Hague I found the combining Moda fabric. Of course I bought too much, but…you never know.. In my mind I saw the quilt in front of me. Beautiful roses and soft pastels were screaming for beautiful pink fabrics and combinations. Unfortunately the search through my cabinets brought many different pinks in very much deviations but those pinks did not justify my beautiful rose fabrics. In fact, it became a pale combination. Not exactly what I had in mind. We started to search for other colour groups and we came up with red. That is the reason why this quilt is called : “Surprisingly Red” Only for the reason that we were so incredibly surprised by the combination of warm red in this pastel colored fabric. |
Rainbow StarsRainbow Stars is one of those patterns that attracts the eye.
The inspiration for this design came from the beautiful Cosmati mosaic tiles and stained glass windows in the churches in Spain and Portugal. In the thirteenth and fourteenth century the Cosmati craftsman where true masters in this kind of mosaic floors and even now, in this century I’m still inspired by this beautiful art. There is a pattern available to make this quilt yourself. The pattern package contains the templates of each pattern part on true to life scale, but you have to do the tracing yourself. This will make the journey to make this quilt even more challenging! |
Listen with your EyesEver once in a while each quilt designer wants to compete with other quilters in the world to see if his or her work is still appreciated. And I'm no exception to that.
Listen with your Eyes is a combination of paper piecing and cutting. You have to make the five lone stars in the centers of the chequered board borders from strips and you cut the star points in a 45° angle using a ruler. The remaining of this quilt, the New York Beauty arches in the corners of the Lone Star star points and the chequered board borders are made with the paper piecing technique. More than hundred of different fabrics and colors were used to make this quilt as stunning as can be. Also the special quilting in rainbow colors added a lot to the overall appearance. Are you in to make a stunning quilt? I won the Trophy for Color on the Open European Quilt Champion ships and the quilt was selected to be displayed in a tour through the United States called “In the American VIII tradition” |
Misty MorningMisty Morning is another quilt based on a Mariner’s Compass Star. The center star in this stunning quilt is a real eye catcher and the twelve stars in the New York Beauty circles makes that this quilt looks gorgeous. The soft pastel colors gives this quilt an old but fresh look.
And did you know that the center star also was used in "Celtic Fantasy". This is another example how you can change the look of a design when you use different colors. |
Out of the BlueThe story behind this quilt is also nice to tell:
I live in Delft in the Netherlands and this city is world famous for their Royal Blue Pottery. So what could give more inspiration to make a quilt than to design something in blue with white…..easy!! So I started designing and chose the best and beautiful blue and white fabrics, started to sew and….the result was soo dull…it was clear that making the quilt with only blue and white is not the best way to go, another contrasting color was needed and therefore the red fabrics are added to this quilt and that made this quilt so unique as it is now, not really a Royal Delft quilt, but a very attractive design which has, in the end, nothing to do with Delft… The base of "Out of the Blue" is made from 24 Lone Star points and is a combination of paper piecing and cutting. You have to make the lone star points from strips and you cut the star points in a 45° angle using a ruler. The remaining of this quilt, including the spikes and the 9 compass stars are made with the paper piecing technique. And that is why this quilt is called “Out of the Blue” |
SeasonsThis stunning quilt is made with a beautiful Lone Star in the center, New York Beauty Beauties arches in the corners of the Lone Star points and the outside corners and flying geese set into a circular design and framed in a square.

American AdventureThe first time I was at Hancock’s of Paducah in the United States, a very lovely woman gave me four large plastic bags. She said: “ you probably can use these fabrics”. I open the plastic bags and I saw a lot of beautiful sorted fabrics. There was a bag with all kind of Christmas fabrics. I have use these fabrics for Christmas Jewel. In an other bag there were many batiks in all kind of colors, there was also a plastic bag with all kind of tiny little flower and Japanese prints and there was a bag with all kind of scraps of Kaffe Fassett fabrics.
I have to say Kaffe Fassett fabrics are not my first choice ;-) but I do like the brightness of his fabrics and… well, I must confess, I was intrigued by the fabrics. I designed American Adventure and I use a lot of the Kaffe Fassett scraps that she gave me. I love that quilt. The purple and bright green fabrics compliments the Kaffes and what to think of the beautiful outside of the flying geese in the center… one bright green side and one purple side….. It’s so nice, don't you think so? |
Dutch TreasureBack in the days, The American Quilters Society in Paducah had sent us a request whether I would be interested in an interview in their magazine. They also requested if I was willing to do this interview and if I was also able to design a pattern especially for that issue.
Dutch Treasure was the pattern that was featured in the AQS Magazine in 2007 along with a big interview conducted by one of their writers Marjorie Russell with me. This issue of the Magazine was one of their best selling issues ever. One year later we had the rights back and we were able to publish the pattern ourselves. Do you have stash??? Yes! In oranges, reds, yellows, purples, greens, cobalts and teals? Yes…. ! Than this will be a nice pattern to use for your stash. You only need small pieces of fabric to make this stunning quilt. With the detailed instructions you can make the 36 easy to make blocks and the result is a beautiful quilt with stars within starbursts. |
CelebrationA lot of quilters find the hexagon a very difficult pattern… But the hexagon is so nice to make and you can make so many different patterns with a hexagon block. I have made several hexagon quilts: Celebration, Morning Glory Curling Colors and Light into Darkness.
I love to work as precise as I can and with a sewing machine it is really not that hard and the final result…… olala is so gorgeous! One little tip for an optimal result: stop before you go in to de ¼” seam allowance. If you dont stitch that first or final ¼” seam allowance you can do it!! |
Follow meWhen you love to make quilts full of flying geese and stars, then, Follow Me.. Is the quilt pattern to own! Lots and lots of flying geese run into and over each other to make this quilt so special!
Also the 17 stars, made in different color ways add up to the special appearance of this quilt. And we are certain that, once you have finished the quilt, you have seen enough flying geese for a while ;-) |
Twinkle StarYes, this is an Hexagon block. I must confess I am an addicted hexagon lover ;-) I like the way you can work with the shapes of the diamond and turn that simple shape into a beautiful hexagon quilt.
For Twinkle star I only use two different diamond blocks. I had the idea to make a small wall hanging… yes you read it well, a small wall hanging! But I don't know what happened to me when I finished Twinkle Star. My small wall hanging had turned itself against me and he grow and grow under my fingers…. I really could not help it. the size…. 75” x 86”. I think I need some help with my addiction;-) |
